The Nine Mounts of Your Palm: Those Fleshy Mounds Tell a Different Story
You've probably looked at your palm lines before — life line, head line, heart line. Everyone does that. But here's the thing most people miss: the mounts.
Those fleshy, padded areas on your palm? The ones that feel springy when you press them? In Chinese palmistry (手相学), they're called the Nine Mounts — 九丘 (jiǔ qiū) — and they reveal just as much about your personality and fortune as the lines do. Maybe more.
Think of it this way: palm lines are like a road map showing where you've been and where you're headed. The mounts are the terrain — the mountains and valleys that determine how easy or hard the journey will be.
The Nine Mounts: Your Palm's Personal Topography
Each mount corresponds to a celestial body (hence "mounts of the hand" or "planetary mounts") and carries specific meanings about your character, talents, luck, and weaknesses. Let's go through them one by one.
🏔️ 1. Mount of Jupiter (木星丘) — Index Finger Base
📍 Location: Directly below your index finger
What it says about you: This is the leadership mount. A well-developed Jupiter mount — springy and slightly raised — means you're ambitious, confident, and naturally command respect. You probably gravitate toward leadership roles and have a strong sense of justice.
If it's overdeveloped (too puffy, sticks out noticeably), you might come off as arrogant or domineering. People with over-the-top Jupiter mounts tend to micromanage and can't stand being wrong.
Flat or sunken? You might lack self-confidence or rely too heavily on others to make decisions for you. Time to step up.
🏔️ 2. Mount of Saturn (土星丘) — Middle Finger Base
📍 Location: Directly below your middle finger
What it says about you: Saturn is the philosopher's mount. If yours is well-developed, you're probably a serious, thoughtful person who values alone time. You think deeply before acting. Great for academics, researchers, or anyone whose job requires concentration and discipline.
Here's the catch: a too-prominent Saturn mount can mean you tend toward gloominess, pessimism, or social isolation. You might overthink everything and struggle to let loose.
Flat Saturn? You may lack direction in life, bouncing between interests without committing to any of them.
🏔️ 3. Mount of Apollo (太阳丘) — Ring Finger Base
📍 Location: Directly below your ring finger
What it says about you: This is the artist's mount — also called the Sun Mount. A nice, slightly raised Apollo mount means you have natural creative talent, a good sense of aesthetics, and you're generally optimistic about life. People enjoy being around you because you radiate positive energy.
Overdeveloped? You might be a little too obsessed with fame, status, or showing off. Some vanity issues here.
Underdeveloped or flat: You could be holding back your creative side. Or you tend to see the glass as half-empty.
🏔️ 4. Mount of Mercury (水星丘) — Pinky Finger Base
📍 Location: Directly below your little finger
What it says about you: The merchant's mount. A full Mercury mount = natural communication skills, quick wit, and business sense. These people make excellent salespeople, negotiators, or entrepreneurs. They can talk their way out of almost anything.
Too developed? Watch out — you might be seen as cunning or manipulative. The line between "smooth talker" and "con artist" gets blurry here.
Flat Mercury: You might struggle with expressing yourself clearly or lack confidence in social situations. Public speaking? Not your thing.
🏔️ 5. Mount of Venus (金星丘) — Thumb Base / Thenar Eminence
📍 Location: The large fleshy area at the base of your thumb
What it says about you: Venus is the largest mount on most palms, and for good reason — it rules vitality, passion, and love. A full, firm, pinkish Venus mount means you have strong physical energy, a warm heart, and deep capacity for affection.
This is also the mount of compassion. People with good Venus mounts genuinely care about others and are generous to a fault.
Overdeveloped (very thick, spongy): You might be prone to indulgence — food, pleasure, relationships. Self-control could be an issue.
Flat or thin Venus: Low energy levels, possibly cold in relationships, or physically frail. Time to check your health routine.
🏔️ 6. Mount of Upper Mars (第一火星丘) — Between Jupiter & Venus
📍 Location: The area between the Jupiter and Venus mounts, near the web of your thumb
What it says about you: This is the active, aggressive Mars — the warrior energy. A developed Upper Mars means you're brave, decisive, and take action when needed. You don't freeze under pressure.
These are the people you want beside you in a crisis. They run toward the fire, not away from it.
Too prominent: Aggression issues. Short temper. You might start fights (literal or figurative) over small things.
Flat Upper Mars: Timid, indecisive, easily pushed around. You might struggle to stand up for yourself.
🏔️ 7. Mount of Lower Mars (第二火星丘) — Between Mercury & Luna
📍 Location: On the outer edge of the palm, between Mercury mount and the Luna mount
What it says about you: This is the passive, defensive Mars — the "calm resistance" energy. It represents patience, endurance, and the ability to withstand pressure without breaking.
A well-developed Lower Mars means you have great staying power. You don't react impulsively but you also won't be pushed around — you have a quiet, steady strength.
Overdeveloped: Passive-aggressive tendencies. You suppress anger instead of dealing with it, which isn't healthy long-term.
Flat: Low tolerance for stress. You give up easily when things get difficult.
🏔️ 8. Mount of Luna (月丘 / 太阴丘) — Upper Outer Palm
📍 Location: The outer edge of the palm, opposite the thumb, below the Mercury mount
What it says about you: Luna (the Moon mount) is all about imagination, intuition, and the subconscious. A full Luna mount means you have a rich inner world — creative, artistic, possibly psychic. Writers, artists, and musicians often have prominent Luna mounts.
You're also likely empathetic and sensitive to other people's moods.
Overdeveloped: You might live too much in your head — escapism, daydreaming, difficulty facing reality. Prone to anxiety or mood swings.
Flat Luna: Practical but unimaginative. You stick to facts and may struggle with creative thinking or empathy.
🏔️ 9. Mount of Earth (地丘 / 火星平原) — Center of the Palm
📍 Location: The central depression of the palm, surrounded by all the other mounts
What it says about you: Also called the "Plain of Mars" — it's the only "mount" that's actually a hollow. Here's the secret: in Chinese palmistry, the quality of this central area matters a lot. If it's firm and springy (not too sunken, not too puffy), you have balanced energy, good health, and the ability to harmonize opposing forces in your life.
A deeply sunken center indicates low energy or health concerns. A raised, puffy center (which is rare) can mean emotional turmoil — too much heat trapped inside.
The ideal? A slight, gentle depression with good skin tone and firmness. That's the sign of a balanced person.
How to Read Your Own Mounts
It's not complicated. Here's the rule of thumb (pun intended):
- Well-developed (springy, raised): The qualities of that mount are strong in you — both the strengths and the potential weaknesses.
- Overdeveloped (too puffy, sticks out): That energy is excessive. The negative traits of that mount are likely showing up in your life.
- Flat or sunken: You're lacking that energy. It's an area for development.
- Crosses or lines on a mount: Stress or obstacles related to that mount's domain.
- Redness or discoloration: Temporary imbalance in that area's energy.
A seasoned palm reader once told me: "The lines tell the story, but the mounts tell you what kind of story it is. A tragedy on flat terrain plays very differently than a tragedy in the mountains." Pretty much sums it up.
The Mounts and the Five Elements
In traditional Chinese palmistry, each mount also has a Five Element association:
- Jupiter (木星丘) — Wood: Growth, ambition, expansion
- Saturn (土星丘) — Earth: Stability, discipline, gravity
- Apollo (太阳丘) — Fire: Creativity, warmth, fame
- Mercury (水星丘) — Water: Communication, flow, adaptability
- Venus (金星丘) — Metal: Passion, structure, density
- Mars (火星丘) — Fire: Action, combativeness, energy
- Luna (月丘) — Water: Intuition, emotion, imagination
When you check your mounts, also think about which elements are strong or weak in your Bazi chart. If your Bazi says you're Wood-heavy but your Jupiter mount is sunken, something's off — your chart and your palm are telling different stories. That in itself is worth thinking about.
One Last Thing
Your mounts change over time. Unlike your major palm lines (which stay relatively stable), the mounts respond to your lifestyle, health, and personal development. A flat Venus mount can fill out after you start exercising. A hard, overdeveloped Jupiter mount can soften after you learn some humility.
So check your palms every few months. You're literally holding a progress report in your hands.
