Feng Shui Front Door: 12 Rules for Wealth, Protection & Good Fortune

Feng Shui Front Door - The Mouth of Qi

In classical Feng Shui, the front door is called "The Mouth of Qi" (气口). It is the single most important feature of any home — the portal through which all opportunity, wealth, relationships, and health energy enters your life. A well-positioned, well-maintained front door attracts fortune. A neglected one repels it.

This guide covers 12 time-tested Feng Shui front door rules, door colors by compass direction, what to place near your entrance, and how to fix the most common front door mistakes — all drawn from the Form School and Compass School traditions.

1. The Mouth of Qi — Why Your Front Door Matters Most

RULE 1

Treat your front door as the primary organ of your home. It breathes in opportunity and exhales stagnation.

Ancient Chinese architects spent more time positioning the front door than any other element of a building. The reasoning: Qi enters through the door first. If the door faces a wall, a sharp corner, or a descending staircase — that's the first energy your home receives every single day.

The Front Door Audit (3-Second Check)

  • ✅ Opens fully without obstruction
  • ✅ Clean, freshly painted, no peeling or rust
  • ✅ Doorbell works; house number is visible
  • ✅ Path to door is clear, well-lit, inviting
  • ❌ Door sticks, squeaks, or is hard to open
  • ❌ Door is hidden, dark, or uninviting

2. Front Door Color by Compass Direction

RULE 2

Choose your front door color based on the compass direction your door faces — not design trends.

Each compass direction is governed by one of the Five Elements. The right door color nourishes that element; the wrong color clashes with it and weakens the Qi entering your home.

Door FacesElementBest ColorsAvoid
SouthFire 🔥Red, burgundy, orange, warm yellow, dark greenBlack, dark blue, gray
NorthWater 💧Black, deep blue, white, metallic silver, goldRed, orange, yellow, brown

💡 Don't Know Your Door Direction? Stand inside your home, facing out the front door. Use a compass app on your phone. The direction you're facing is your door's Feng Shui direction.

3. The Red Door — When & Why

RULE 3

A red front door is powerful — but only when your door faces South. Otherwise, use red sparingly as an accent.

The red door is the most famous Feng Shui symbol — but it's widely misunderstood. Red belongs to the Fire element, which nourishes South-facing doors. For other directions, a fully red door can create an elemental clash.

Red Door Guidelines:

  • South-facing door: Full red door strongly recommended — attracts fame, recognition, vitality
  • Southeast (Wealth corner): Red-purple or burgundy door acceptable
  • ⚠️ East/West: Red accents only — red welcome mat, flowers, or door decorations
  • North-facing door: Avoid red entirely — Fire and Water clash, washing wealth away

4. Blocking Poison Arrows (Sha Qi) at the Entrance

RULE 4

If your front door faces a sharp corner, pole, dead-end wall, or long straight road — neutralize it immediately.

"Poison Arrows" (煞气, Sha Qi) are sharp, aggressive energy streams that attack your front door. They come from:

  • T-junction: A road aimed directly at your door (the worst)
  • Neighbor's roof corner pointing at your entrance
  • Lamp post, tree trunk, or utility pole directly in front
  • Staircase descending toward your door (wealth drains away)
  • Sharp building corner across the street

Fixes (in order of effectiveness):

  1. Bagua mirror (八卦镜) above the door — the classic cure, deflects Sha Qi
  2. Fu dog statues (石狮子) — a pair flanking the entrance, mouths outward
  3. Tall plants or hedge — soft barrier between door and poison arrow
  4. Wind chime (metal, 5 or 6 rods) — disperses aggressive energy before it reaches the door
  5. Curved path — if possible, make the approach curve rather than shoot straight at the door
⚠️ Important: A Bagua mirror should only be used outside the home. Never place one indoors — it's too powerful and can cause headaches and discord among residents.

5. Door Size & Proportion

RULE 5

Your front door should be the largest door in the house — but proportional to the home's size.

An oversized door on a small house "overwhelms" the home and lets Qi rush in too fast. An undersized door "chokes" opportunity. The ideal proportion: the front door should be roughly 1/8 to 1/6 the width of the front facade.

Also: the front door should be larger than the back door. If the back door is bigger, wealth enters through the front but exits faster through the back.

6. Never Block the Front Door

RULE 6

The path to your front door must be completely clear. No bikes, trash bins, dead plants, or storage.

Every obstacle between the street and your door is an obstacle between you and opportunity. The approach should feel like an invitation. A cluttered, dark, or unwelcoming entrance sends the message: "Energy not welcome here."

Clear These Immediately:

  • ❌ Dead plants or bare patches in the garden
  • ❌ Trash bins visible from the street
  • ❌ Bikes, strollers, or sports equipment piled near the door
  • ❌ Broken doorbell, peeling paint, rusty hardware
  • ❌ Shoes piled outside the door (this is very common in Asian homes — use a closed shoe cabinet)

7. Door Alignment — Staircase, Bathroom & Back Door

RULE 7

The front door, staircase, bathroom door, and back door must NOT form a straight line.

Three classic Feng Shui front door alignment mistakes:

ProblemWhy It's BadFix
Door faces staircase directlyQi rushes up or down — doesn't settle in the homePlace a screen, tall plant, or crystal between door and stairs
Door aligns with bathroomWealth energy flows straight into the toiletKeep bathroom door closed; place a full-length mirror on bathroom door exterior
Front door aligns with back doorQi enters and exits instantly — no accumulationPlace a screen, bookshelf, or large plant between them
Door faces kitchen directlyQi strikes fire energy — arguments and health issuesHang a curtain or place a rug between door and kitchen

8. The Welcome Mat & Entrance Rituals

RULE 8

Your welcome mat is the first thing Qi touches. Choose it with intention.

Welcome Mat by Door Direction:

  • South door: Red or green mat — activates Fire element
  • North door: Black or blue mat — activates Water/career
  • East door: Green or brown mat — activates Wood/family
  • West door: Gray or white mat — activates Metal/creativity
  • Southeast door: Purple or green mat — activates wealth
  • Southwest door: Yellow or pink mat — activates love

Place three ancient Chinese coins tied with red ribbon under the welcome mat — this is a classic wealth-attracting charm. Replace the mat when it becomes worn.

9. Best Plants for the Front Entrance

RULE 9

Flank your front door with a pair of healthy, rounded-leaf plants. Never use spiky or dead plants.

Best Entrance Plants:

  • Jade plant (Crassula ovata) — the ultimate Feng Shui wealth plant; round leaves = coins
  • Peace lily — purifies air, soft curved leaves welcome gentle Qi
  • Lucky bamboo — 3 stalks for happiness, 5 for wealth, 8 for prosperity
  • Boston fern — lush and protective; excellent for shaded entrances

Avoid at All Costs:

  • ❌ Cactus or any spiky plants — creates Sha Qi aimed at everyone who enters
  • ❌ Dead or dying plants — sends "decay" energy into the home
  • ❌ Thorny roses near the door — beauty with hidden aggression

10. Entrance Lighting — Illuminate Your Path

RULE 10

A well-lit front door attracts opportunity. A dark entrance repels it.

Light represents Fire element — the energy of fame, recognition, and visibility. A dark front door literally keeps you "in the shadows." The ideal setup:

  • ✅ Two matching lights flanking the door (pairs = balance)
  • ✅ Warm, golden light (2700K–3000K) — never harsh white/blue
  • ✅ Motion-sensor light if the entry is naturally dark
  • ✅ Light the house number — opportunity needs to find you
  • ✅ Replace burnt-out bulbs immediately — a dead light signals dead opportunity

11. Mirrors at the Entrance

RULE 11

A mirror directly facing the front door bounces Qi back out. Place mirrors on side walls only.

A mirror facing the front door is one of the most common Feng Shui mistakes. Every time the door opens, incoming Qi hits the mirror and bounces back outside — taking your opportunities with it. This is especially dangerous for wealth energy.

Mirror Rules for the Entrance:

  • ✅ Side wall — reflects and expands the space without blocking Qi
  • ✅ Behind a console table — indirect reflection only
  • ❌ Directly facing the door — absolute worst placement
  • ❌ Cracked or distorted mirrors — fragments your energy

12. The Wealth-Attracting Entrance Setup

RULE 12

Assemble these 7 elements at your front door to create the ultimate wealth-attracting entrance.

The Complete Wealth Entrance Checklist:

  1. Door color matched to compass direction (Rule 2)
  2. Pair of Fu dogs or guardian statues flanking the door
  3. Jade plant or lucky bamboo on each side
  4. Three Chinese coins under the mat (tied with red ribbon)
  5. Two warm lights illuminating the entrance
  6. Wind chime (6-rod metal) near the door — 6 is the wealth number
  7. Door opens inward — captures Qi into the home (never outward)
💡 Quick Wealth Fix: Can't do all 7? Just do these three: clear the path, paint your door the right color, and place three coins under the mat. Three actions, 80% of the benefit.

FAQ

What if my front door faces a wall?

Facing a wall within 6 feet is called "blocked Qi" — your home cannot breathe. Hang a mirror on that wall to symbolically open the space. If you can't, place a bright light and a landscape painting (of open vistas) on the wall.

I rent — can I paint my front door?

Ask your landlord! Many will approve a neutral-to-classic color. If not, use a removable door wrap or a large wreath in your door's power color. Energy responds to intention, not just paint molecules.

Should my front door open inward or outward?

Inward. An inward-opening door symbolically "scoops" Qi into the home. An outward-opening door pushes Qi away. Most modern safety codes require outward-opening exterior doors — in that case, place a bright welcome mat and a curved path to "guide" Qi in before the door swings.
