What Is a Chinese Birth Chart?
A Chinese birth chart (生辰八字) consists of Four Pillars — Year, Month, Day, and Hour — each containing two characters: a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. Together, these 8 characters encode your elemental makeup, personality, and life trajectory according to Bazi (Eight Characters) fortune telling.
Western astrology uses planetary positions. Chinese birth charts use time cycles — the 60-year Sexagenary cycle that Chinese civilization has tracked for over 4,000 years.
Reading Your Birth Chart
Your Zodiac Animal (生肖)
Your birth year determines your zodiac animal — one of 12 signs in a repeating cycle. Each animal carries distinct personality traits, lucky elements, and compatibility patterns.
Your Year Element
Each zodiac year is associated with one of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) in either Yin or Yang form. For example, 2024 is Yang Wood Dragon; 2025 is Yin Wood Snake; 2026 is Yang Fire Horse. Your year element influences your external personality — how others perceive you.
Your Day Master (日主)
In Bazi, the Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar — represents you: your core self, internal personality, and life essence. It's the most personal element in your chart. The Day Master's relationship with the other seven characters reveals your career potential, relationship patterns, and life challenges.
The Four Pillars
| Pillar | Represents | Time Scale |
|---|---|---|
| Year Pillar | Ancestors, childhood, external personality, social face | 0–16 years |
| Month Pillar | Parents, career, work environment, relationship with authority | 17–32 years |
| Day Pillar ★ | Self, spouse, marriage, core identity | 33–48 years |
| Hour Pillar | Children, creativity, legacy, inner thoughts | 49+ years |
Element Balance
A balanced chart has all five elements present. Too much of one element creates excess; too little creates deficiency. For example, too much Fire = impulsive and aggressive; too little Water = inflexible and rigid. Understanding your elemental balance is the key to Bazi fortune telling.
